My History
I grew up in Maryland, where I developed my love of horses while riding hunt-seat equitation and hunter over fences. I now enjoy my small herd of three, which mostly hang out and mow my pastures! When I have time, I enjoy learning more about dressage.
During my undergraduate years at the University of Maryland, I met Dr. Amy Burk, who turned my love of nutritional biochemistry into a love of equine nutrition. After completing my Master’s degree, I followed in her footsteps and attended Virginia Tech, where I completed my Ph.D. under the guidance of Drs. Benjamin Corl, Ray Geor, Jill McCutcheon, and Mark Crisman. My Ph.D. work blended regulation of metabolism with obesity-associated inflammation. I developed strong interests in these areas during my undergraduate years, and they are still my principle research passions.
Following graduate school, I taught for a little over four years at The Ohio State University. I then moved to Sam Houston State University to be closer to my husband’s family and to have the opportunity to lead a program. My primary interests are equine teaching, supervising graduate student research projects, and helping our undergraduate teams and clubs develop undergraduate leaders.
